World Must Not Close Its Eyes to the Needs of Pakistan

  • A high-ranking UN official says the world must not close its eyes to the needs of the Pakistani people, especially the conflict- and flood-affected population.

Last month, U.N. officials said that 100 days after the floods swept through the country, millions of people remain in urgent need of safe drinking water, food, health care, and shelter as winter sets in.

They said that the "initial solidarity" demonstrated in the early days of the crisis "must be re-energized if Pakistan is not to be forgotten."
More than 1,700 people were killed and nearly 20 million others affected when floodwaters triggered by monsoon rains submerged one-fifth of the country.
