  • Senior United State Democrats tried to continue to press for a final Senate vote in this week on a nuclear arms control pact with Russia, but the opposition Republican Party's leader in the Senate said on Sunday that he will not vote for approval.

According to VOA news, the promised “no” votes by Senator Mitch McConnell and some other prominent Republicans, Democratic leaders including Vice President Joe Biden say they believe they still have enough support in the Senate to ratify the treaty.

The U.S. and Russian presidents signed the new START treaty in April, but it must be formally approved by both nations' lawmakers. The treaty would require both countries to reduce their stockpiles of nuclear warheads and bombers.
