Poland Court Convicts Russian Man of Spying
A court in Poland has convicted a Russian national of espionage and sentenced him to three years in prison, the official said.
Authorities identified the defendant as Tadeusz J, according to Polish legal custom by his first name and last initial, He was arrested last year on charges of gathering information on behalf of Russian military intelligence while running a small business in Poland.
Tadeusz had lived in Poland for about 10 years before being arrested in April of 2009. He was indicted earlier this year and his trial started in October. Prosecutors had demanded a five-year prison term. Both sides have a right to appeal.
Poland's relationship with Russia has deteriorated since the collapse of the Soviet Union and has been especially tense since Poland joined NATO in 1999.
This year has seen improvement, including a visit by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to Moscow earlier this month.
