Germany Plans to End Military Draft
Germany plans to end the Military draft in July 2011 and turn its armed forces into an all-volunteer, professional military.
On Monday, Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg mentioned that the new army will also be streamlined down from 250,000 to roughly 185,000 troops.
Both men and women will be allowed to serve up to 23 months, including overseas deployments.
The German government sees the moves as essential to modernizing the army.
Germany currently has just over 7,000 troops abroad, in Afghanistan and Kosovo, and smaller contingents off the Horn of Africa and the coast of Lebanon.
